Visitation
May 31, 2024 Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Daily Readings: Zephaniah 3:14-18a; Luke 1:39-56
Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in which she visits her cousin, Elizabeth.
The meeting of these two women was a joyful encounter for the baby in Elizabeth's womb, who leaped for joy as soon as he heard Mary's greetings. Elizabeth then cried out with a loud voice and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
The encounter between the two women plays a significant role in society. But the most significant is the meeting of their unborn children. As we all know, the child inside Elizabeth's womb is John, who paved the way for the Lord. He was also the one who baptized Jesus in the river Jordan.
A sick person feels loved when they receive visits during their illness. It is noticeable in the hospital that patients who received visitors became lively and eager to cooperate with the treatment compared to patients who did not receive any visitors.
A hospitalized former superior received a visit and responded with obvious joy on her face.
Call to Action for Catholic Living: Just like the child in Elizabeth's womb, who leapt up with joy, and the joy of the former superior in the hospital, our times of visitation and encounters with one another bring a lot of smiles. Even though those we visited felt some pain, our presence would divert that pain.
Lord, may our presence with the sick person bring joy and peace. Amen.
