Daily Readings: James 4:13-17; Mark 9:38-40
St. James makes it very clear that planning for our success without acknowledging that we depend on God is mere foolishness. One cannot see the future as our lives are short and fragile. However, it does not mean that we cannot make plans for the future.
In the gospel reading, John tries to stop the one who is casting out demons in Jesus’ name, as he does not belong to the group. But Jesus says the one who is not against us is for us.
Life is uncertain. Nobody can delve into the future, so make the desire to please God your life’s principal driving force. Our view of the future is blind and boasting about the future is arrogant. Therefore, trusting God with the future is wisdom. What is required is to do well in the present.
In the gospel reading, John had reservations about the man who performed miracles as he did not belong to the group. We do have a narrow understanding of who belongs and who does not. Having such a thought pattern can affect the functioning of our ministry as we label our relationship with others based on a particular group. What counts for God is based on one’s life and works. It is evident to Jesus' disciples.
Do I have a flexible attitude that allows me to work with people who have various perspectives? Is it possible for me to collaborate with anyone without setting limits? Is it possible for me to keep and uphold the core truths of our religion in a culture of sharing the gospel?
