A Remarkable Humility
September 16, 2024 Monday of the Twenty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time
Memorial of Saints Cornelius, Pope, and Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs
Daily Readings: 1 Corinthians 11:17-26, 33; Luke 7:1-10
The gospel depicts the story of a Roman centurion whose servant is gravely ill. Demonstrating remarkable humility and faith, the centurion sends Jewish elders to ask Jesus to come and heal his servant. He expresses his unworthiness to have Jesus enter his home and shows a profound understanding of authority by asserting that, just as he commands his soldiers and they obey. He, hence, requests Jesus to command healing.
His position as a Roman officer could have afforded him power and privilege, yet he approaches Jesus with humility. This humility is a stark reminder that faith is not confined to social status or religious identity. The centurion’s application of faith invites us to recognize and celebrate belief in places we might not typically expect.
Call to Action for Catholic Living: Are we willing to approach Jesus with humility? Are we ready to recognize His authority in our lives? And how can we be instruments of grace and healing in our communities?
Humility opens the door to deeper relationships both with God and others, where we recognize our shared humanity and need for grace. We are called to support one another, praying and advocating for each other in moments of desperation. Having the mindset of the centurion, we shall practice our faith with humility which is the mother of all virtues. Amen.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
