Living Faith in Humility and Secrecy
June 19, Wednesday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time
Memorial of Saint Romuald, abbot
Daily Readings: 2 Kings 2:1, 6-14; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18
In the first reading, Elijah was taken by the Lord in a chariot into heaven. Elisha was very hesitant to leave him, so they crossed the river Jordan together.
Before Elijah left, Elisha asked for Elijah’s double spirit. He witnessed how Elijah was taken into heaven in a flaming chariot with flaming horses, and then he received Elijah’s mantle that had fallen from him.
In the Gospel today, Jesus told his disciples to be careful not to perform righteous deeds so that people may see them; otherwise, they will have no recompense from their heavenly Father.
He emphasized that when giving alms, one should not let others know it. Similarly, when praying, one should go to their inner room, close the door, and pray to the Father in secret. And the Father who sees in secret will repay them.
Jesus emphasized that everything should be practiced secretly and in silence, for the Father in heaven is watching over, and the reward is waiting.
Call to Action for Catholic Living: We need to remember that God is monitoring us. Whenever we do good deeds, especially for the least of our brothers and sisters, God records and accounts for it on our behalf. God ensures that there are rewards awaiting us, if not on this earth, then in heaven.
Lord Jesus, help us to observe prayer, giving alms, and fasting silently. Amen.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
