Letting Go

Background Music: Panalangin by Mark Anthony Cuevas
    Voiced by: Shirly Benedictos

May 27, Monday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time
Memorial of Saint Augustine of Canterbury, bishop
Daily Readings: 1 Peter 1:3-9; Mark 10:17-27

The first reading speaks of the genuineness of faith, which is more precious than gold and perishable even when tested by fire. The faithful man believes and loves God despite not seeing Him.

In today's Gospel, Jesus challenges the person who wants to follow him. Although this man adheres to the commandments of Moses, Jesus argues that more is needed to become his followers.

He challenged him to sell his properties and share them with the poor. This suggestion made the individual, who was wealthy, feel saddened. Jesus told his disciples this parable: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”

We ask ourselves these questions: Why is it so hard to let go of earthly wealth or even material things? Is it because of the sentimental value? Is it due to the individual's self-interest? It is because we need to maintain our wealth. After all, with wealth comes power. There are so many reasons why letting go is very difficult.

Call to Action for Catholic Living: We must remember that we cannot bring all this material wealth to the next life. Material things cannot save our souls; what can save us is our faith in God. We should share earthly wealth with others rather than hoarding it.

Lord, help us to share the things that God has given us. Amen

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
