July 27, Saturday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: Jeremiah 7:1-11; Matthew 13:24-30
In today’s gospel, Jesus teaches the parable of the weeds and the wheat. A farmer sowed good seeds in his field, but while everyone was sleeping, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat.
Since the weeds look similar to the wheat, it’s difficult to separate them. The farmer’s servants ask if they should pull out the weeds, but he instructs them to wait until harvest time when the weeds can be easily distinguished from the wheat.
This parable teaches about the kingdom of heaven, where good and evil coexist until the end of time. Just as the farmer can’t immediately separate the wheat from the weeds, we often struggle to distinguish between good and evil in our own lives and the world around us.
The parable also highlights God’s patience. The farmer doesn’t rush to pull out the weeds, knowing it would damage the wheat. This tells us that God is not in a hurry to judge us or separate us from others. Instead, He gives us time to grow, learn, and mature. He provides space to learn from our mistakes, seek forgiveness, and draw closer to Him.
Call to Action for Catholic Living: Let us trust in God’s goodness and patience. Growth takes time, and mistakes are growth opportunities. Let us ask for God’s grace to discern between good and evil, always choose good, and learn from our failures to avoid repeating them.
May the Holy Spirit grant us the patience to do good. Amen.
