Humility of the Childlike, an Advent discipline
November 29, Tuesday of the 1st Week of Advent
Daily Readings: Isaiah 11:1–10; Luke 10:21–24
“I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to childlike (Lk 10:21)
In the Gospel today, Jesus refers to two groups of people, namely, the "learned and wise" and the "childlike."
The learned and wise represent the Pharisees and Scribes of Jewish society, whereas the childlike represent Jesus' own illiterate and humble disciples. The first group may feel self-sufficient and proud of their learned knowledge, just as some of the intellectuals freely say that they are not interested in learning about God.
But the children possess a disposition of trust in the providence of God. His disciples are children who are socially inferior, poor, and don't know how to read or write. However, God shows them his secrets because they have a humble heart.
Revelation of the mysteries of God is opened to all. When God's people have a humble attitude, blessings come pouring down on them. For example, the shepherds, who were childlike, were able to welcome a newborn child into their hearts, whereas the scribes at the palace of Herod, who were intellectuals, were not blessed with the same.
Mary was blessed to be the mother of the Son of God only because of her humble disposition as a handmaid of God. There is always a space for God to work miracles in a humble heart, whereas there is no space for God in a proud heart.
Humility is a great Advent practice that helps us make room in our hearts for the Lord. Amen.
