Medical science has a long list of causes for sickness, such as infection by viruses or bacteria, genetic and the concentration of toxins in the body. Further, some of the recent studies point out physical reasons causing physical sickness. Modern psychosomatic medicines are based on the relationship between our mind and body. For example, excessive stress can lead to ulcer, fear to chilling, anger, high blood pressure, etc.
Similarly, an extreme sense of guilt can lead people to physical paralysis. Perhaps that is one of the possible reasons for the paralysis of the paralytic in the gospel today. A crushing sense of guilt over some past sins could be physically manifested as paralysis. Thus, by forgiving sins, Jesus liberates him from the clutches of sins that paralyze him.
Advent is a time to heal the wounds of the past by repenting of our sins. A heart clean of sin creates the best possible manger for the Lord to take birth. Amen.
