“Jesus passed by and saw Matthew sitting at the tax booth and said follow me”
The feast of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist, invites each one of us to follow the footprints of Jesus. Jesus’ invitation to follow Him is for everyone. He was inclusive and compassionate in His ministry, even tax collectors, sinners, the sick and the marginalized are welcomed. He made it clear at the table that his mission is primarily to call sinners.
“Jesus passed by and saw Matthew sitting at tax booth and said ‘follow me’ and he followed.” The gaze of Jesus and his words made Matthew to decide once and for all to follow Jesus and he never turned back. So deep was His communication; it was eye to eye, heart to heart and soul to soul communication.
In our day today life situations, we are called to listen to Jesus’ words more closely. Though we are unworthy, he looks at us with mercy and makes us His disciples. We shall have the confidence like St. Matthew to follow Him and to announce His Good News by our life. Let us continue to walk in the footprints of Jesus and live the gospel values like mercy, love, forgiveness, sharing, truth, and justice.
