Embracing the Cross and Civic Duties

Background Music: Panalangin by Mark Anthony Cuevas
    Voiced by: Shirly Benedictos

August 12, Monday of the Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings:  Ezekiel 1:2-5, 24-28c; Matthew 17:22-27

Jesus foretells His passion, death, and resurrection for the second time, leaving the disciples distressed. After Peter’s strong reaction to the first prediction, Jesus firmly responded, "Get behind me, Satan!"

In a strange conversation about paying taxes, Jesus emphasizes the importance of fulfilling civic duties.

Understanding that the cross is part of the journey is a fundamental lesson in discipleship. Jesus gradually prepares His disciples for the Paschal Mystery and their future mission in the kingdom of God.

When discussing taxes, Jesus asks Peter’s opinion, who notes that taxes are collected from foreigners, implying citizens are exempt.

However, Jesus instructs Peter to pay the tax, emphasizing its role in the common good and state development. Jesus invites us to fulfill our civic responsibilities.

Call to Action for Catholic Living: Life’s difficulties are not the end. The resurrection of Jesus gives us hope and energy for our daily lives, nourished by the Eucharist. Let us ask for God’s grace to follow Him in all circumstances.

By following Jesus' footprints, let us be a shining light to guide and illuminate others. Amen.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
