Embracing the Call of God
June 15, 2024 Saturday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: 1 Kings 19:19-21; Matthew 5:33-37
The first reading reveals how the Prophet Elijah called Elisha to be his follower. Elisha's call does not involve a direct encounter with God. Instead, it is the prophet Elijah who initiates Elisha's change in vocation. Elisha transitions from a simple boy working on the farm to becoming a follower, servant, and disciple of the holy man Elijah.
In today's Gospel, Jesus reminds his disciples: “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow.’” He further emphasizes, “Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the Evil One.”
Saying "yes" to the call of God takes immense courage. One cannot be certain of what lies ahead, just as Elisha left his home and family to follow the prophet Elijah. Those who enter religious life exhibit great faith in God. Only those who recognize this calling can say "yes" to God.
Call to Action for Catholic Living: Despite the uncertainty, it is believed that the call of vocation is the handiwork of God. Many are called, but few are chosen.
Lord, help us embrace the vocation that you have prepared for us. Amen.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
