Children of light
August 1, Tuesday of the 17th week in Ordinary time,
Memorial of Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
Daily Readings: First reading: Exodus 32:15–24, 30–34; Gospel: 13:31–35
As the wheat seedlings began to germinate, the Devil sowed the field with vegetation. In the field, both the wheat and the weeds develop together. If cleaning is performed, the wheat will also be uprooted; therefore, wait until harvest so that a large-scale cleaning can occur.
Similarly, we frequently perceive 'evil' individuals within the Church. We begin to believe that misconduct can run rampant and impede the development of the church, and that we are not immune to its potential consequences.
The message of today's Gospel is that God will always find a way to triumph, even though the adversary will always find a way to destroy what God has planted well.
Saint Alphonsus, whose feast day we observe today, was the patron saint of confessors, moral theologians, and lay apostolic activity. Even though he was deceived by circumstances, expelled from the community he founded, and afflicted with debilitating rheumatism until the end of his life, he maintained his morals. He rose to prominence and was canonized as a Saint. "The righteous shall shine as the sun in the Father's kingdom."
Let us maintain our values and cling to the truth until the end of our lives, for we are descendants of the true God, the Light.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
