Beware of Advertisements
November 16, Thursday of the Thirty-second Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: Wisdom 7: 22b – 8:1; Luke 17: 20 – 25
Advertisements are the keys to penetrating people's hearts and enticing them to buy a product. In the words of Will Rogers, "Advertising is the art of convincing people to spend money they don't have for something they don't need." We saw a lot of people buying items they never wanted. How can marketing persuade people to buy products? According to Fred Alan, advertising is composed of 85% confusion and 15% commission.
In today's gospel, Jesus warns us of misleading advertising for God's kingdom. These qualities of marketing can be compared to the Gospel of today.
Jesus instructs his followers not to follow those who claim that the kingdom of God is here or there. Because these people, through misleading marketing and words, persuade people to believe, and people are willing to go to any length to believe.
We've seen incidents when people committed suicide because they thought the wrong people were the messiahs. How could these imposters have done this? Their straightforward technique only serves to perplex people. They accomplish their goals by perplexing others. Jesus cautions about erroneous teachings as well.
How do I deal with these issues? The first reading for today plainly states that evil cannot triumph over wisdom. We need God's knowledge not only in the Kingdom of God but also in our daily lives to eliminate false marketing.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
