Are we the stewards or the masters?
March 18, Friday 2nd Week of Lent
St. Cyril of Jerusalem
Daily Readings: Genesis 37: 2-4, 12-13a,17b-28 & Matthew 21:33-43, 45-46
Jesus tells the parable of the wicked tenants to the chief priests and the elders of the people. The master gave the vineyard to the tenants on the lease. But the tenants want to possess the property, so they treat the owner's servants poorly and are even ready to kill the owner’s son. They are wicked and selfish.
The irony is that Jesus points out that the leaders of Israel killed many prophets and planned to kill Jesus as well. As a prophet, he was wanted by many people. They did not want to risk the crowds because they thought of him that way.
The message is that we are the stewards, not the masters. God created human beings and found them very good. We are excellent and superior.
As time passes, we develop inappropriate behaviors that stain our original nature. Disregarding that we are the stewards, we act like masters.
Now is the right time to remain faithful to God and serve him with humility and obedience. An honest steward is loyal to God, himself, and his neighbors. It is essential in the season of Lent to practice faithfulness and to remain in the love of God. Let us be good stewards in the vineyard of the Lord.
Today be grateful to God for entrusting you with resources to promote faith and the face of God.
