A new vicar general has been appointed in the Diocese of Rajshahi in Bangladesh this month.

Bishop Gervas Rozario of Rajshahi named Father Emmanuel K. Rozario as the diocese's new vicar general effective June 6.

The diocese comprises the civil districts of Rajshahi, Natore, Pabna, Sirajgonj, Bogra, Chapai Nawabgonj, Naogaon and Joypurhat with a 67,685 Catholic population.

Father Rozario shared with Radio Veritas Asia the "current concerns of the diocese," which include "evangelization, new evangelization, and re-evangelization."

He said the faithful also need "spiritual and pastoral care, education, and faith formation."

"The diocese considers the worldwide pandemic as a big challenge as it causes wounds, social distancing, suffering, sickness, and even death," said the priest.

He said, however, that the health crisis has also become "a big opportunity" as it deepens the spiritual closeness of people.

“I feel that the first and foremost task of a vicar general is to assist the bishop in his apostolate, administration, and pastoral care," said Father Rozario.

"More than a position, it is a mission of service," he said, adding that "every work is important, demanding and big if it is taken seriously.”

“I will help the bishop to implement his plans and charism," he said.

Father Rozario was born on Feb. 8, 1963, in Foilzana Village under the St. Francis Xavier parish.

He studied philosophy and theology at the Holy Spirit Major Seminary in Dhaka and was ordained priest on Dec. 28, 1993.

He was sent to Rome for higher studies and obtained a Licentiate and Doctorate Degree in Biblical Theology from the Pontificia Universitas Urbaniana.

He worked as assistant parish priest in the Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Bonpara; as parish priest in Maria Virgo Potens Catholic Church, Borni; and at the Holy Family Catholic Church, Kolimnagar.

He was recently appointed parish priest of Good Shepherd Cathedral Parish in Baganpara.

He has been teaching Sacred Scripture at eh Holy Spirit Major Seminary, Dhaka, since 2004.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
