Myanmar: Little Way Sisters of St. Theresa Association mark 25 years of service
The silver jubilee of the founding of the Little Way Sisters of St. Theresa Association was celebrated at the Mother House, Kalaymyo, Myanmar on June 1.
Bishop Felix Lian Khen Thang of Kalay presided over the thanksgiving Mass. Eleven priests, 100 nuns, and students joined at the Mass.
At the beginning of the Jubilee Mass, the Papal blessing from Pope Francis, and other letters of honor from Archbishop Paul Tschang In-nam (Apostolic Nuncio to Myanmar), Cardinal Charles Bo (president of Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences and Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar), Bishop Felix Lian Khen Thang of Kalay and Sister Theresa Phe Ling Yah (Provincial of Little Way Sisters of St. Theresa Association, Myanmar) were read out.
In his homily, Bishop Felix emphasized the amazing grace of God granted to the nuns.
Praising the nuns, he said, “I admire the service rendered by the Little Way Sisters of St. Theresa in my diocese and I thank Archbishop Nicholas Mang Thang (emeritus), the founder of this Association.”
“Archbishop Thang’s thoughtfulness of founding the Association was in response to the needs of the situation and his untiring endeavor for evangelization and mission. Now, we see the fruits of his work,” the bishop said.
The prelate urged the Sisters to follow the footsteps of St. Theresa by doing little things with great love as mentioned in the motto.
On behalf of the Little Way Sisters of St. Theresa Association, Sister Maria Van Nei Kim (Superior General) thanked God for the blessings granted to the Association.
She also thanked Emeritus Archbishop Thang, Miss Mary Doohan (Co-Founder from England) and Sister Assumpta Wong (Co-Founder) for their constant care, guidance and support.
She was grateful to Bishop Thang for presiding over the Mass and accepting them into his diocese and supporting their spiritual and material needs.
The nuns exhorted the younger Sisters and students saying, “Today, we celebrate our silver jubilee. Be prepared from now on for the golden jubilee as I may not be around by that time. Thus, be ready to carry the yokes given upon us for the greater glory of God.”
At the end of the celebration, breakfast was offered by the Little Way Sisters of St. Theresa.
Emeritus Archbishop Thang (the then bishop of Hakha Diocese) founded the Little Way Sisters of St.
Theresa Association in cooperation with Miss Mary Doohan (from England) in 1997.
At the request of Archbishop Thang, Sister Assumpta Wong (the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Apparition) changed her habit and led the Little Way Sisters of St. Theresa Association as a Co-Founder from the beginning up to now.
The charisms of the Association are to make adoration to the Blessed Sacrament at least one hour a day; to pray for all the priests, especially those working in the dioceses and to educate and up bring vulnerable women.
All the training centers or formation houses and Mother House are situated in Kalay Diocese.
Most of their convents or communities are based in Kalay and Hakha dioceses.
At present, 215 nuns work in 43 convents in Myanmar’s five dioceses and one community is situated in the Philippines for their higher education.
For the time being, they are applying to obtain the permission of the Diocesan Rite in the Church. - Joseph Zo Mung/RVA Zo
