Manila Cathedral congratulates Cardinal Maeda as first archbishop of new Osaka-Takamatsu archdiocese
In a statement posted on social media on Thursday, the Manila Cathedral lauded Cardinal Thomas Aquinas Manyo Maeda.
"The Manila Cathedral community congratulates His Eminence Thomas Aquinas Manyo Maeda for being the first archbishop of the new archdiocese of Osaka-Takamatsu," the statement.
Maeda was appointed archbishop of the Osaka-Takamatsu archdiocese on August 15.
He was born Thomas Aquino Manyo Maeda in Nagasaki prefecture in 1949.
Maeda studied at Saint Sulpitius Major Seminary in Fukuoka. He was ordained in 1975.
He was appointed bishop of Hiroshima by Pope Benedict XVI, an office he served from 2011 to 2014.
Pope Francis named him a cardinal in 2018.
"Cardinal Maeda was Pope Francis' envoy to the 60th anniversary of the post-war Manila Cathedral celebrations," the statement said."
Maeda was vice president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Japan at the time.
Acting on behalf of Pope Francis, Maeda celebrated Mass at the Manila Cathedral in April 2018. He was named cardinal the following month. Oliver Samson
