Indian parish celebrate women’s day reflecting on Bible readings
St. Mary’s parish in the East Indian state of Manipur celebrated International Women’s Day reflecting on special scripture readings on March 8.
The readings were from the Old Testament book of Numbers 27:1-11 and the New Testament Gospel according to Luke 13:10-17. The Bible readings invited the participants to always stand along with those downtrodden in society, especially women, children and vulnerable victims.
Father Mung, the parish priest of St. Mary’s Parish in Tuibong, led the women in prayer, worship, and reconciliation.
"God created women with divine qualities like love, compassion, trust, faith, patience, and the like. Since women are rich in spiritual qualities, they must give and shine to the world,” Father Mung said during his homily.
Around 33 women leaders from different villages participated in the event focusing on prayer, fasting and penance. Women leaders offered rice, vegetables, fruits, which is part of their fasting.
Most women came walking a distance of around 9 kilometers, few hired autorickshaws to attend the event.
One participant Angela Deikhoching expressed her concern over Ukrainian women fighting for their country. She exalted the women gathered to stand for the parish community in all possible capacity.
The parish could not have International Women’s Day celebration in 2020 and 2021 due to lockdown and the Covid-19 pandemic.
The theme of International Women’s Day 2022 is “Gender Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.”
