Former Indonesian Catholic Bishops' Conference Chairman Dies
Bishop Fransiscus Xaverius Sudartanta Hadisumarta passed away on Saturday, 12 February 2022, in Jakarta, Indonesia.
He was born on December 13, 1932, entered the novitiate of the Order of Carmel in 1952, and made his first profession on July 16, 1953.
He was ordained as a priest on July 12, 1959, in Malang, East Java. Bishop Hadisumarta is an expert in Bible interpretation. During his priesthood, he studied Bible Interpretation in Rome and Jerusalem.
In 1966, he taught at the Pematang Siantar Seminary, North Sumatra Province, and later at the Malang Seminary, East Java. As a priest, he was also the Provincial of the Carmelite Order in Indonesia.
He was appointed as Bishop of Malang on March 1, 1973, and ordained a bishop on July 16, 1973, in Malang.
From 1979 to 1988, he was named chairman of the Indonesian Catholic Bishops' Conference. After that, he was appointed Bishop of Manokwari-Sorong on May 5, 1988, by Pope John Paul II. For 15 years, he served in the Diocese of Manokwari Sorong, Papua Province
Bishop Hadisumarta submitted his letter of resignation as Bishop of Manokwari Sorong on June 30, 2003.
In retirement, he was assigned to the Maria Bunda Karmel Parish, Tomang, and for 14 years lived at Wisma Karmelit Jakarta.
He was also writing devotionals in one of Indonesia’s Catholic magazines and websites. On several occasions, he also served in the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation, especially in the Archdiocese of Jakarta.
