Bangladesh: Students organize free book fair to promote reading habit

People of all ages in Rajshahi city met at the festival to get free books to mark International Mother Language Day at Circuit House Road in Rajshahi on February 21. 

Mind Castle students organized the book fair through social media. Other people joined the free book fair to take books. Mind Castle students advertised to take any two books for free. Participants also donated their books. 

It had been on a month-long campaign to collect 10,000 old books, which resulted in a free book fair on February 21.

 

The organizers hope that the book fair will help increase the habit of reading books and build an intelligent nation.  

Father Proshanto Anid, the Bangladesh Catholic Students' Movement (BCSM) coordinator of Rajshahi, said that people of all walks of life, including young people, are far from books today. And this initiative welcomes people with empty pockets and take two books at a time.

"The bookstore aimed to make people love reading books by reducing the use of mechanics and technology," said Father Proshanto.

The priest pointed out that the book fair is an example for the youth. “People are learning a lot from this book fair. I also wish this book fair a success. And I urge it to continue in the future."

Sister Shibly Purification of the Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows suggested choosing a book like a best friend.

It will guide you, entirely nurture your life, increase your knowledge, and will assist you to have a positive view of life. It also helps you to implement your dreams in life," Said Sister Purification.

Young Kaniz Fatema said, "I like the idea that books can be taken for free and books can be exchanged for the book you read. I donated two books for the books I took home.”

Joy Biswas says it is a remarkable initiative by Bangla "Ekushey Chetna" to focus on the book fair and the interest in reading books. He encourages others to read books.

Mind Castle Organizer Aparna Reza says, "People love books and reading the books. I have a long expectation to do something about books. The wish was fulfilled. At present, my work is successful only if I can read books to people."

Gabriel Gomes, a parent who visited the fair with the child,   hope that this book fair will show the way to the next generation to move away from technology addiction."
