Chinese bishop emeritus, Ma Zhongmu, dies at age 101

Bishop Joseph Ma Zhongmu, emeritus bishop of the Diocese of Ningxia, died at the age of 101 on March 25th.

Bishop Joseph Ma Zhongmu, emeritus bishop of the Diocese of Ningxia, died at the age of 101 on March 25.

During his lifetime, the late bishop translated the text of the Holy Eucharist into Mongolian, but it was not approved by the Vatican because of the absence of experts in the language.

Bishop Ma Zhongmu was the only Mongolian bishop and the oldest bishop in China until his death.

He was born in Chengchuan county, Otog Front Banner, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia, China on Nov. 1, 1919.

He was ordained priest by Bishop Wang Shouli of the Diocese of Ningxia in Sanshenggong on July 31, 1947.

In 1951, he served as a priest in Gechou church. In 1956, he began to teach in Hohhot Major Seminary.

He was promoted to the episcopate and became the diocesan bishop of Ningxia on Nov. 8, 1983.

In 2005, Bishop Ma retired from his office.
