Thailand: Proclaiming hope and redemption: A jubilee mission in prisons

On January 22, as part of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate's (OMI) ongoing prison ministry in Lomsak, Petchabun, Thailand, a pastoral visit was conducted in alignment with the Jubilee Year’s call for mercy and outreach, as emphasized by Pope Francis.

Led by Bishop Paul Tawat Singsa of Nakhornsawan Diocese, the visit included diocesan clergy, members of the OMI, a Christian delegation, a Buddhist representative, and other religious leaders.

The event aimed to inspire hope, promote forgiveness, and foster a sense of faith and community among inmates.

Bishop Singsa emphasized the importance of such initiatives, saying, "Our presence encourages them to see that their future can be meaningful and beneficial to others."

"Spiritual development does not only transform the inner self but also creates individuals ready to give back to society," the prelate said.

He added, "With faith, hope, and love in God, they can become valuable members of the community and instruments of blessings to others in the future."

The program featured teachings and reflections led by Bishop Singsa and a group of pastors.

Inmates received encouragement to embrace transformation and view their lives as opportunities for renewal through uplifting messages and biblical principles.

The session also included encouraging songs, creating a joyful atmosphere filled with smiles and a sense of togetherness.

About 1,500 inmates, many of whom are from the Hmong community, received food and cake to commemorate the occasion.

Key Themes of the Program:

  • It instills hope in prisoners by reminding them of God's blessings.
  • It encourages forgiveness and reconciliation.
  • It builds a community of love, faith, and hope within the prison.
  • Biblical principles and moral values are taught.
  • Inmates are guided to correct thier mistakes and find ways and opportunities for fresh starts.
  • They are inspired to embody the values of "light and salt" in the world creating a positive impact. This will lead to a positive impact.

This initiative reflects the mission of the OMI in providing pastoral care to incarcerated individuals, reaffirming the Church’s commitment to mercy, rehabilitation, and renewal.
