A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Mandalay, Myanmar, on March 28, Friday afternoon, sending strong tremors across the region, including Bangkok, Thailand, and the northern city of Chiang Mai.

The quake occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time and was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock in Myanmar’s Sagaing region just 12 minutes later, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Germany’s GFZ Center for Geosciences.

In Bangkok’s Chatuchak Market, an under-construction building collapsed, while in Myanmar, the historic Ava Bridge, which connects the Ava and Sagaing regions, reportedly fell.

The tremors caused widespread panic in Bangkok, where more than 17 million people reside, many in high-rise apartments.

Alarms sounded as buildings swayed, prompting evacuations in condominiums, hotels, and office towers across the city.

Residents and workers quickly descended staircases and gathered on the streets, seeking safety.

Despite the strength of the quake, no tsunami warning has been issued at this time.

Authorities in both Myanmar and Thailand are assessing the extent of damage and any casualties.

Geological agencies continue to monitor for potential aftershocks and structural risks.

Residents in affected areas are advised to remain cautious and follow official safety guidelines.
