Pope appoints new bishop of Poona in India
Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Thomas Dabre (77), Bishop of Poona, and appointed John Rodrigues (56), Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay, as Bishop of Poona in India and it was announced in Rome on Saturday, March 25, 2023.
Bishop John Rodrigues was born in Mumbai on August 21, 1967, and ordained a priest on April 18, 1998.
From 1998-1999, he served as Assistant Parish Priest at St. Michael Church, Mahim, and from 1999-2000, he became the Secretary of the Archbishop of Bombay. From 2000 to 2002, he obtained a Licentiate in Systematic Theology at the Pontifical Lateran University, Rome.
He taught Systematic Theology at St. Pius X College from 2002 to 2011 and was Secretary of the Priests' Council of the Archdiocese of Bombay from 2010 to 2013.
His tenure at St. Pius X College was from 2011 to 2013 as Dean of Studies, and he served as Archdiocesan Coordinator for the "Year of Faith" from 2012 to 2013. Since 2013 he was the Rector of St. Pius X College.
On May 15, 2013, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay, and on June 29, 2013, he was ordained, Bishop.
Since 2019, he is a member of the CCBI Commission for Bible. He is the Rector of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, Bandra, Mumbai, India
