At least nine persons, including a priest, a nun, and lay people from the Diocese of Dumaguete, Philippines, will receive papal awards for their committed work.

On August 31, 2024, Bishop Julito Buhisan Cortes of Dumaguete presented to the media the nine papal awardees of the diocese for their dedicated service to the Church.

The diocese said their example is an inspiration for us to faithfully love and serve the Lord through the Church.

Pope Gregory XVI established the Pontifical Order of Pope Saint Sylvester in 1841, and it is an honorary, neither monastic nor military.

It recognizes the laity active in the apostolate, particularly in exercising their professional duties and masters of the different arts.

The members have no further rights except to wear a gold-enamelled Maltese cross with the words "1841 Gregorius XVI restituit" on one side and the image of Saint Sylvester on the other.

An Apostolic Nuncio or one's bishop may propose someone for the Order. Despite their lack of official responsibilities, Knights and Dames of the Order typically receive invitations to significant diocese events, such as the installation of new bishops and the ordination of priests.

The Catholic Church bestows an accolade known as the "Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice" medal, which means "For Church and Pope" in Latin. Another name for it is the "Cross of Honor."

On July 17, 1888, Pope Leo XIII founded it in observance of his golden sacerdotal jubilee.

Clergy and laypeople receive it in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the church.
