Philippine bishop urges OFWs in Lebanon to heed government directives amid rising tensions
A prominent official from Stella Maris Philippines has called on Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Lebanon to closely follow government advisories for their safety as tensions continue to rise in the region.
Bishop Ruperto Santos, the Bishop Promoter of Stella Maris Philippines and Diocese of Antipolo, urged OFWs to heed the government’s directives amidst the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) shared his message, emphasizing that the government is working tirelessly to ensure the safety of Filipinos in Lebanon.
“For your safety, please continue to follow the directives from the Philippine government, as they are working tirelessly to ensure your safe passage back to our country. Stay strong and keep faith. Your resilience is an inspiration to us all, and soon, you will be reunited with your families, where you can find peace and security once more,” Bishop Santos advised.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has also urged Filipinos to encourage their loved ones in Lebanon to return home while the airports remain open.
On August 16, the Philippine Embassy in Lebanon issued an advisory urging OFWs to leave the country immediately due to the growing threat of violence.
Those who choose not to join the repatriation program have been advised to relocate to safer areas outside Beirut, South Lebanon, and the Bekaa Valley.
Bishop Santos reassured OFWs that the entire Filipino nation and the Catholic Church are united in prayer for their protection from the dangers of the ongoing conflict.
“The entire nation stands with you, praying for your safety and swift return home. Your perseverance and unshakable spirit are a testament to the steadfast Filipino heart. Each day you face with hope and determination brings you closer to the embrace of your loved ones and the comfort of home,” he added.
In a related update, Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega reported that thousands of Filipino migrants are eager to return home, with 356 already repatriated.
Currently, there are an estimated 11,000 Filipinos in Lebanon, including undocumented individuals.
Bishop Santos entrusted the safety and swift return of the OFWs to Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, asking for her guidance and care during these challenging times.
