New bishop appointed for Myitkyina Diocese in Myanmar

Pope Francis appointed Father John Mung Ngawn La Sam, M.F., (Missionaries of Faith) as the new bishop of the Diocese of Myitkyina, Myanmar, on October 29, 2024.

Previously serving as parish priest of Saint Paul Church and head of the Retreat Centre in Shadau, Fr. La Sam brings extensive experience to his new role.

Msgr. La Sam was born on April 27, 1973, in Moe Gok and studied law at Myitkyina University and philosophy at Saint Joseph’s Institute of Philosophy in Pyi Oo Lwin.

He completed a year of spirituality at the Missionaries of Faith formation house in Rome from 2009 to 2010, followed by theological studies at the Pontifical Lateran University from 2011 to 2014.

He professed his religious vows in the Congregation of the Missionaries of Faith on September 8 and was ordained a priest on January 16, 2016.

Msgr. La Sam previously served as assistant parish priest of Saint Colombano Cathedral in Myitkyina from 2016 to 2017.

Since 2017, he has been the parish priest of Saint Paul’s Church and the head of the Retreat Centre in the Diocese of Myitkyina in Myanmar.
