Malaysia’s Penang diocese to boost social mission in Lenten campaign
The Diocese of Penang in Malaysia aims to foster collaboration, support, and joint efforts in the field of social mission through its Lenten campaign in 2024.
To realize this goal, the diocese has presented a total of RM (Malaysian Ringgit) 269,200, or USD 56,000, to 29 parishes and 10 social mission organizations to support their Kempen Kasih initiatives.
Representatives of these groups received financial assistance during a check presentation ceremony by Caritas Penang at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit on January 20.
Social mission groups received RM124,200 (USD 26,000), while local parishes were allotted RM145,000 (USD 30,000).
The organizations present were Persatuan Kebajikan Hemodialysis St Anne, Bukit Mertajam; Father Julien Agape Centre; Mercy Home, Penang Diocese Aids Ministry; Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital; NTA Schools for Refugee Children; St. Joseph’s Home; Home For The Aged (CWS) SIMEE Care Centre; Tenaganita; and Little Sisters of the Poor.
During the same event, Cardinal Sebastian Francis, Bishop of Penang, led the launching of the diocese’s Lenten Theme for 2024: “Together We Rebuild Our Church, Community, and Common Home.”
Meanwhile, the representatives presented some key issues they are currently facing, particularly the shortage of volunteers and challenges in recruiting staff.
Furthermore, Caritas Penang chairman Fr. Joachim Robert reminded everyone in the gathering to work hard in their collaboration and support one another. - Luke Godoy
