Malaysian archbishop invites ‘those who have drifted’ back into the Church on Jubilee

Archbishop Julian Leow Beng Kim of Kuala Lumpur Diocese.

The archbishop of Kuala Lumpur has extended a warm invitation to “those who have drifted away from the Church”, urging them to return and embrace the faith anew during this special Jubilee Year.

Emphasizing that the Jubilee is a year of repentance and reconciliation, Archbishop Julian Leow Beng Kim said they will find “no judgment” as they find their way back home into the Church.

“As we celebrate this year, may you find the courage to return and experience the embracing warmth of our community,” said the prelate in his New Year’s message.

On the other hand, he stressed that the Jubilee must also be spent looking within oneself honestly and acknowledging the imperfections each person carries.

“But let us not be weighed down by guilt; instead, let the act of repentance be an invitation to renew our commitment to Christ and to one another,” he said.

Moreover, Archbishop Leow said this new year is a chance to be “united by faith, empowered by hope, and encouraged by the promise of Christ” after going through various complexities and adversities in 2024.

“Many of us may have struggled with doubts, fears, and uncertainties, but in these very struggles, we are reminded of God’s unwavering presence in our lives… The essence of being a pilgrim means acknowledging that we are always on the move, always seeking greater understanding, love, and communion with our Creator,” he said.

He therefore encouraged everyone to come together and be “the hands and feet of Christ in the world.”

“May our words of peace ripple through our neighborhoods, and may our actions of kindness be a testament to the hope we cherish. We are called to be the bearers of that light, poignant reminders that, even in uncertainty, faith remains steadfast and hope endures,” he stated.

Furthermore, Archbishop Leow called on the faithful to visit the pilgrimage sites designated specifically this Jubilee Year where the Plenary Indulgence can be obtained.

“Allow these sacred spaces to inspire you, as we meet those whose journeys are different yet resonate with our own struggles and hopes,” said the prelate.

Five pilgrim churches have been designated in the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, including the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
