Kuki-Zo Faithful Celebrate Palm Sunday with Archbishop Neli, Renew Hope Amid Crisis

Catholics in Churachandpur, Manipur, celebrated Palm Sunday on April 13 at Good Shepherd Parish, Lamka, with Archbishop Linus Neli and Fr. Stephen Touthang.

The Catholic community in Churachandpur District, Manipur, northeastern India—largely composed of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)—celebrated Palm Sunday with enormous devotion at Good Shepherd Parish, Lamka, on April 13.

Archbishop Dr. Linus Neli of Imphal and Father Stephen Touthang led the service.

The faithful began the commemoration at the parish school campus, joyfully joining the traditional Palm Sunday procession to the church.

Holding palm branches, participants of all ages proclaimed, “Hosanna in the highest!” echoing Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem.

During the Eucharistic celebration, Archbishop Neli shared a moving homily, highlighting the special significance of this Holy Week as the faithful continue to observe the Jubilee Year 2021.

He explained the Jubilee as a sacred time to remember Christ’s coming and renew one’s relationship with God through faith, baptism, and obedience.

Reflecting on Pope Francis’ theme, “Pilgrims of Hope, the archbishop emphasized the power of hope and prayer, especially for those facing a crisis. “In our darkest moments, we must pray—whether short or long—God will answer,” he said.

His message resonated deeply with the Kuki-Zo community, many of whom remain displaced and are seeking peace and restoration.

Palm Sunday carries added meaning this year as the community continues to suffer from ethnic violence and displacement. For many, it is not only a spiritual event but also a symbol of longing for peace, healing, and a return to their homes and villages.

Mr. Michael Ginzasuan, advisor of the Parish Pastoral Council, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Neli for his presence.

He shared the community’s deep sense of isolation from the archdiocese since the violence began in May 2023 and called for greater diocesan support.

Ginzasuan also highlighted the growing number of IDPs in Churachandpur and appealed for the establishment of educational institutions, particularly a college, to serve the needs of the displaced youth.

As Holy Week begins, the Kuki-Zo Catholic community remains steadfast in faith and hope, praying for God’s healing and strength amid the continuing challenges.
