Indian Cardinal is named spearhead study group on nunciatures around the world

Indian Cardinal Oswald Gracias, the Archbishop of Bombay, has been appointed co-ordinator of the study group, evaluating the functioning and role of papal representatives in the church worldwide.

The study group will make suggestions to improve their functioning and become more missionary-synodal.

The study will involve officials from the Secretary of State, the Dicastery for Bishops, and the Dicastery for the Evangelization of Peoples.

The Synod on Synodality convened in October 2023. Pope Francis had identified several items that needed specialised study.

The Vatican communique clarified that the Holy Father himself chose some of the topics. These subjects will not be discussed during the Synod's October 2024 session, but a brief report on the group's working plans will be presented to the Synodal Assembly.

The Study Group includes Cardinal Mario Grech, head of the Synod Secretariat; Archbishop Luciano Russo, Secretary for Papal Representatives; and Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, President of the Pontifical Academy for the formation of Holy See diplomatic personnel.

This study group has already started its work with several meetings in Rome with officials of the Secretariat of State and presidents of episcopal conferences from different continents This group's work is expected to be finished, possibly by June 2025.
