A free medical health camp for internally displaced individuals (IDPs) was organized at St. Joseph School, Singngat, in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur, as part of a larger initiative covering 11 locations across Churachandpur District on March 22.
The camp, inaugurated by Justice B.R. Gavai of the Supreme Court of India and Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), underscored the importance of combining legal and healthcare support for marginalized communities.
The camp was a joint initiative by NALSA, Manipur State Legal Services, District Legal Services Authority Churachandpur, CMC Churachandpur, Saveetha Medical College Chennai, CHC Singngat, Assam Rifles Khuga Battalion, Mahar Regiment, and Garhwal Regiment.
It provided crucial medical care to over 170 IDPs from St. Joseph's Relief Camp, Lancha, and Belpuan.
Medical services, including consultations and free medications, were delivered by a 27-member team led by Dr. Steve Tungnung from CHC Singngat and supported by two medical officers from the Assam Rifles Khuga Battalion.
The Assam Rifles and CHC Singngat played key roles in providing medication and healthcare services to the displaced communities.
In addition, it launched a free legal helpline (15100) to provide legal aid to IDPs in distress.
Coordination of the event was facilitated by Legal Cell Volunteers Singngat and Mr. Thomas Paupi, the relief camp in charge.
Father Athanasius Mung, the parish priest of St. Thomas Church in Singngat, Manipur, and principal of St. Joseph's School, welcomed the initiative and expressed gratitude to the organizers and medical teams for supporting the displaced.
The ongoing ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which began on May 3, 2023, have displaced over 60,000 people in Manipur, resulting in more than 250 deaths, thousands of injuries, and widespread destruction of property and places of worship.
Overall, the district-wide health camp reached 14,178 IDPs across 81 relief centers, with over 11 medical teams working tirelessly to provide much-needed healthcare services to those affected by the crisis.
