As part of the ongoing observance of the Season of Creation, the Archdiocese of Bombay, under the leadership of Cardinal Oswald Gracias, organized a tree plantation drive on September 17, 2024.

The initiative, aimed at promoting environmental stewardship, took place with the active involvement of Holy Name School, which distributed saplings as a symbolic gesture of care for the environment.

In line with this year’s theme, “To Hope and Act with Creation,” the Archdiocese of Bombay hopes to inspire further collective action toward the protection and restoration of creation.

The event brought together leaders and faithful from various religious backgrounds, demonstrating a shared commitment to safeguarding the environment.

The Season of Creation, which begins on September 1, the Day of Prayer for Creation, and culminates on October 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi—patron saint of ecology—is a global movement uniting 2.2 billion Christians in care for our common home.

This year’s symbol, “The First Fruits of Hope,” draws inspiration from Romans 8:19–25, encouraging the faithful to act in solidarity with creation.

Further commemorating this sacred time, the Archdiocesan Office for Environment (AOE) held a special event on September 21 at Don Bosco International School.

The celebration was graced by the presence of the Papal Nuncio to India and Nepal, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, and Cardinal Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay.

This gathering not only reflected on the fruits of the Archdiocese’s decade-long ecological ministry but also emphasized the urgent need for greater efforts in response to the escalating environmental crisis. It served as a powerful reminder of humanity’s responsibility to care for God’s creation.

A standout moment of the program was Eco Canticles, an artistic tribute to creation through drama, music, and dance. This unique presentation vividly illustrated the beauty of the natural world and underscored the critical need for preservation in the face of growing environmental challenges.

Through initiatives like these, the Archdiocese of Bombay continues to lead by example, fostering hope and action in the face of ecological concerns, in keeping with the spirit of the Season of Creation.
