Filipino liturgists promote pilgrimage for synodality

Catholic liturgists in the Philippines are advocating for dioceses and parishes to actively encourage pilgrimages as a way to spread the message of faith and deepen devotion following the National Meeting of Diocesan Directors of Liturgy (NMDDL) in the Philippines.

According to a statement from the NMDDL, “Dioceses, parishes, and basic ecclesial communities must be encouraged to hold pilgrimages because of their spiritual value and communal service."

The group expressed the importance of promoting pilgrimages among dioceses, parishes, and basic ecclesial communities due to their spiritual significance and contribution to the community.

They believe that it is a chance to encounter unfamiliar individuals, demonstrate their religious beliefs, and advocate for charitable actions.

The NMDDL also said the invitation to become a synodal church means that Catholics should unite and embark on a shared path of prayer while also spreading the message of the gospel and assisting those in need.

“In this way, popular piety through pilgrimages becomes aid towards a synodal Church,” they added.

The promotion of pilgrimage sites, including national shrines or diocesan shrines, was specifically encouraged in order to enhance the sense of unity, involvement, and purpose within this type of popular religious devotion.

NDMLL is an annual gathering of liturgical directors, liturgical students, and professors from all over the Philippines.

For this year, the event was held in Calasiao, Pangasinan, from August 28 to 31, 2023.

In the Philippines, pilgrimages are one of the most important events for Catholics.

Many Filipino devotees always look forward to this activity in their parishes or dioceses.

Undeniably, it has been part of the yearly routine of Filipinos to prepare and take part in different pilgrimages every year, be it local or international.

The most popular international pilgrimage is to the Holy Land and other sacred sites where our Lord Jesus Christ traveled or where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared.-Leahna Villajos

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
