Filipino lawyer appointed to Vatican bank’s board

Atty. Sheila Marie L. Uriarte-Tan was named a new member of the Board of Supervision of Istituto per le Opere di Religione (IOR), known otherwise as the Vatican Bank.
In a press statement, Jean-Baptiste de Franssu, president of the supervisory board, expressed his confidence in Tan, who has over 30 years of experience in banking and asset management.
“We welcome Sheila Marie L. Uriarte-Tan,” de Franssu said. “Her impressive experience and leadership skills in international banking and finance will help the IOR enhance the Board renovation process initiated last autumn.”
The board has faith in Tan that she could help embolden the Vatican’s bank.
“Her joining us is a significant step towards strengthening the Institute’s strategic goals and improving the quality of services for our clients and the Holy See,” he said.
Tan is a member of the Finance Board for the Archbishop of Manila, and a trustee and executive committee member for both the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center and the San Juan de Dios Educational Foundation in Manila.
She also served as president and CEO of Bank of the Philippine Islands’ (BPI) Asset Management & Trust Corporation and held executive roles at the BPI Capital Corporation.
Tan also served as the Co-Managing Director of Ayala Group Legal.
She is an economics and law graduate at the University of the Philippines, the premier state university in the country.
The Vatican generates revenue from Peter’s Pence, the old term for donations the Church receives from across the globe. The Vatican Bank was founded by Pope Pius XII in 1942 to manage the Church revenues.
It is responsible for managing its financial assets offers banking services to Catholic institutions, and manages funds and investments as part of the Church’s global mission.
