Filipino bishop ordained on historic EDSA People Power Revolution anniversary

Bishop Rufino Sescon, Jr. was ordained during the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution on February 25 after being appointed head of the Diocese of Balanga by Pope Francis in December 2024.
Sescon served as personal secretary to the late Manila Archbishop Cardinal Sin, who played a major role in the peaceful EDSA People Power Revolution that ended the 21-year rule of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, Sr.
He was ordained a priest by Cardinal Sin in September 1998. He served as chancellor of the Archdiocese of Manila from 2008 to 2015.
Sescon was also the administrator of the Archbishop’s Palace when its resident was Cardinal Sin.
He was appointed parish priest and rector of Quiapo Church by Manila Archbishop Jose Advincula in 2022.
In 2023, the Quiapo Church achieved national shrine status during his tenure as parish priest and rector.
Sescon, a professed member of the Dominican Order, was ordained at the Manila Cathedral by Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen-Dagupan, who also served as an aide to Cardinal Sin. Cardinal Advincula was the homilist.
Bishop Ruperto Santos of Antipolo and retired Bishop Honesto Ongtioco of Cubao co-consecrated Sescon on his episcopal ordination.
Villegas, Santos, and Ongtioco served as bishops of the Diocese of Balanga, where Sescon will be formally installed as its fifth bishop on March 1.
Sescon chose to be ordained on the EDSA People Power Revolution anniversary as a “form of prayer for generosity” to “never forget” the spirit of the peaceful uprising that restored democracy in the Philippines.
