Faith in action: TNCRI leads mega movement to save earth on Day of Consecrated Life
The Tamil Nadu Conference of Religious (TNCRI) marked the Day of Consecrated Life with an inspiring environmental initiative, “Nature is Godliness,” coinciding with the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2, in Tamil Nadu, South India.
The event, hosted at St. Anne’s Generalate Campus in Madhavaram, united religious leaders, political dignitaries, and the public in a collective mission to protect the planet.
The planting of 1,000 saplings stood as a powerful symbol of commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
S. Sudharsanam, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the Madhavaram constituency, presided over the event, joined by chief guest Dr. S. Inigo Irudayaraj, MLA of Trichy East, and esteemed speakers Dr. Fr. Xavier Arulraj, senior advocate and secretary of the Legal Cell—TNLBC, and Fr. S. Antoinsamy, secretary of TANCEAN. Together, they highlighted the vital role of faith-based initiatives in ecological preservation.
During a press interaction, Jesuit Fr. C. Joe Arun, chairman of the State Minorities Commission, underscored the Tamil Nadu government's commitment to religious minorities and their role in social transformation. Announcing an ambitious green initiative, he stated:
"Under the leadership of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, religious communities in Chennai will plant 100,000 trees this year, reinforcing our shared commitment to environmental stewardship,” he said.
This pledge reflects a collective vision for sustainability, positioning faith communities at the forefront of climate action.
At 4:00 p.m., a silent peace rally began at Besant Nagar Beach and concluded at the Annai Vailankanni Shrine, serving as a powerful symbol of unity in tackling environmental challenges.
Flagged off by Jesuit Fr. C. Joe Arun, the rally carried a strong message: "If water rises, paddy will rise; let’s save water footprints."
The call to conserve water resonated with participants, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable water management amid growing environmental concerns.
A public meeting at 5:00 p.m. honored 25 distinguished environmental contributors, recognizing their unwavering efforts in promoting sustainability.
Sr. Nambikkai SAP, secretary of TNCRI, facilitated the session, while Jesuit Fr. Jebamalai Raja, provincial of Jesuit Chennai Province, delivered a compelling address on faith and environmental responsibility.
Bringing an artistic touch to the event, the Tertian Sisters enthralled the audience with a street play, vividly portraying the urgent need for environmental awareness and sustainable living.
Fr. Don Bosco SDB, vice president of TNCRI and Provincial of the Salesian Chennai Province, outlined a structured action plan for ongoing environmental efforts.
Sr. Maria Philomi FBS, President of TNCRI, led an oath-taking ceremony at the event's conclusion, during which participants vowed to continue their commitment to environmental preservation.
As the day’s events concluded, Fr. Don Bosco SDB celebrated a Holy Eucharist at 6:30 p.m., reinforcing the spiritual commitment to ecological responsibility.
Sr. Jebamalai FMM, DCRI president of Chennai Zone, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, acknowledging the dedication and contributions of all who made the event a success.
