CCBI Unveils 115 School Textbooks for CBSE and ICSE Schools
On September 10, 2024, the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) launched a comprehensive set of 115 new school textbooks, including electives and non-core curriculum materials, tailored for institutions under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE).
The event took place at St. John's National Academy of Health Sciences in Bangalore.
Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, President of the CCBI, presided over the unveiling of these textbooks during a CCBI Executive Committee meeting, which was attended by 40 bishops, educationists, major superiors, secretaries of the CCBI Commissions, and other dignitaries.
Cardinal Ferrão, who is also the Archbishop of Goa and Daman, led the event, which featured speeches from several prominent ecclesiastical leaders, including Cardinal Oswald Gracias, the Archbishop of Bombay; Cardinal Anthony Poola, the Archbishop of Hyderabad; Archbishop Peter Machado of Bangalore; and Archbishop Elias Gonsalves of Nagpur.
Father Stephen Alathara, Deputy Secretary General of the CCBI, welcomed the attendees, while Mr. Nigel Fernandes, CEO of Arclight Global, expressed gratitude on behalf of the publishing team.
"In India, the Church's primary mission is education," Cardinal Ferrão remarked. "With numerous schools across the country, we are dedicated to providing quality education for future generations. This new series of textbooks will further strengthen our education apostolate."
Cardinal Gracias lauded the initiative, extending his congratulations to everyone involved in the publication of the new textbook series for Catholic schools.
Archbishop Machado highlighted the Church’s role in shaping future citizens who uphold human and constitutional values. He pointed to the CCBI's value education textbooks, launched in 2022, as a crucial resource in this endeavor.
Arclight Global, the CCBI’s publishing arm, produced the textbooks following its establishment in 2022. This launch represents a significant advancement in the Church’s ongoing efforts to enhance educational resources across its schools in India.
