Caritas Manila's initiative contributes to health improvement of expectant, nursing moms
The Unang Yakap (First Embrace) Program, adopted by Caritas Manila, continues to significantly impact the lives of pregnant and nursing mothers in Tondo, Manila, and other parts of Metro Manila.
According to a report from the Archdiocese of Manila Office of Communications, the program provides nutritious meals and essential vitamins, ensuring the health of both mothers and their children during a crucial stage of development.
The Unang Yakap is the flagship initiative for Early Essential Newborn Care (EENC), launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Region (WPRO) and UNICEF’s Regional Office for East Asia and the Pacific (EAPRO) and implemented by the Philippine Department of Health to combat malnutrition and promote maternal and child health.
Mothers benefiting from the program have expressed their deep gratitude for the support they have received.
Father Anthony Acupan, OSA, parish priest of Santo Niño de Baseco Parish, shared how this initiative has blessed their community.
“We are so thankful to Caritas Manila and the Alvarez Foundation for their generosity and compassion," Acupan said. "This program has provided our mothers with the nourishment they need while caring for their babies."
He acknowledged the hard work of volunteers and staff from Caritas Baseco, who selflessly dedicated their time and effort to ensure the program's success.
These volunteers surpass expectations, sacrificing their family obligations to assist others.
"Their sacrifices and compassion inspire us all. I pray for their well-being and continued dedication,” Acupan added.
In 2022, Caritas Manila reported assisting over 75,000 children, preventing malnutrition, stunting, and early childhood mortality.
Caritas Manila is a social service wing of the Archdiocese of Manila.
