Bishop Teodoro Buhain, former Radio Veritas Asia leader, dies at 87

Bishop Teodoro Buhain Jr., the Former Radio Veritas Asia General Manager and retired auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Manila.

Bishop Teodoro Buhain Jr., former General Manager of Radio Veritas Asia (RVA) and retired Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Manila, passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at the age of 87.

The Archdiocese of Manila confirmed his passing in a statement, noting that he died at 11 a.m. at Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City.

Born on August 4, 1937, in Bacoor, Cavite, to Federica and Teodoro Buhain Sr., Bishop Buhain dedicated over six decades to the Church and the Catholic media.

Ordained a priest on December 21, 1960, for the Archdiocese of Manila, he rose to become one of the Philippines' most respected figures in both pastoral and media ministry.

In January 1983, at age 45, Buhain was appointed auxiliary bishop of Manila, receiving consecration on February 21, 1983.

Throughout his tenure, he was known for his compassionate leadership, holding various significant roles, including chairman of the Cardinal Santos hospital management committee and national coordinator for the Chinese Apostolate in the Philippines.

However, Bishop Buhain's contributions extended beyond the pulpit.

From 1981 to 1990, he served as the General Manager of RVA, the Catholic Church's pioneering radio network in Asia, known for its outreach to various Asian countries.

Under his leadership, RVA became a beacon of faith and truth, broadcasting in multiple languages to reach communities facing political and religious challenges.

His work in Catholic broadcasting extended to his later role as president of the Philippine Church’s ZNN Radio Veritas-Global Broadcasting System, Inc., where he helped strengthen the Church’s voice in media.

Bishop Buhain’s dedication to the Church and Catholic media marked his ministry with a unique blend of pastoral care and evangelization.

Even after his role in Catholic media, he remained deeply committed to parish ministry. Before retiring in 2003, he served as the pastor of St. John the Baptist Church in Quiapo, Manila, where he continued to guide and support his community.

Retiring at age 66, Bishop Buhain left behind a legacy of 41 years as a bishop and 63 years as a priest.

His contributions to both the spiritual and media landscapes of the Catholic Church in the Philippines have left a lasting impact, remembered fondly by those who worked alongside him and the faithful who were touched by his ministry.

Funeral arrangements for Bishop Buhain have yet to be announced.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
