Bangladesh: Sylhet Diocese inaugurates Divine Mercy Cathedral

In a momentous and spiritually uplifting event, the Sylhet Diocese in Bangladesh celebrated the inauguration and blessing of the newly built Divine Mercy Cathedral on February 22.

After years of anticipation, the Christian community in Bangladesh joyfully gathered to witness the grand opening of the sacred place of worship.

The theme of the event, "A Meeting of Faith, Unity, and Blessings," resonated throughout the ceremony as thousands of faithful, clergy, and distinguished guests participated in the historic occasion.

Archbishop Kevin S. Randall, the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See to Bangladesh, graced the event as the chief guest, alongside Bishop Shorot Francis Gomes of Sylhet Diocese.

The opening ceremony was further honored by the presence of Cardinal Patrick D’Rozario, Archbishop Bejoy N. D’Cruze of Dhaka, Archbishop Lawrence Subrata Howlader of Chittagong, and other bishops from dioceses across Bangladesh.

The event commenced with a solemn Holy Mass, during which Bishop Gomes led the blessing of the cathedral. As prayers and hymns echoed through the newly built church, the faithful gathered in deep reverence and gratitude.

Archbishop Randall explained the significance of the cathedral and said, "This cathedral is not just a structure; it stands as a testament to the unity, faith, and service of the Christian community. It calls upon us to keep our hearts open to the Lord."

Archbishop D’Cruze remarked on the cathedral's role in spiritual and social upliftment, emphasizing, "This magnificent place of worship will not only serve as a center of faith but also foster education and social service among the community."

Archbishop Howlader echoed this sentiment, calling the cathedral "a beacon of Christianity and a blessing for future generations."

Prelates from across Bangladesh, including Bishop Gervas Rozario of Rajshahi, Bishop James Romen Boiragi of Khulna, Bishop Sebastian Tudu of Dinajpur, and Bishop Subrata B. Gomes, shared words of encouragement, highlighting the cathedral’s role in strengthening the Christian community’s faith, unity, and charitable works.

Bishop Rozario described it as "a symbol of our unity and strength," while Bishop Boiragi expressed hope that it would "inspire future generations in the spirit of service."

Following the inaugural ceremony, a special reception was held in honor of the guests, accompanied by a vibrant cultural program featuring musical and dance performances by local Christian youth and children.

The event was a joyful celebration of faith and togetherness, with participants expressing their gratitude for the realization of the long-awaited cathedral.

Maria Khonglah, a participant in the ceremony, shared her emotions, saying, "We are overwhelmed with gratitude today. This beautiful cathedral is a special gift and a testament to God’s love and blessings."

Another parishioner, Raphael, remarked, "The Divine Mercy Cathedral will deepen our faith and inspire us to serve God with greater devotion."

Bishop Gomes thanked all who contributed to the realization of the cathedral, including donors, benefactors, organizers, and the faithful.

Looking ahead, the Sylhet Diocese envisions the Divine Mercy Cathedral not only as a place of worship but also as a hub for educational, humanitarian, and cultural activities, continuing to serve the broader community with love and compassion.

The inauguration of the Divine Mercy Cathedral marks a new chapter in the spiritual journey of the Christian community in Bangladesh, reinforcing their faith and commitment to unity, service, and devotion.
