Asian Communication Conference webinar on “The Synodal Church” and the “New Way of Being a Communicating Church in Asia”
The first-ever “Asian Communication Conference” (ACC 1.0), which is set for Nov 18-19 this year, will explore different dimensions of “The Synodal Church” based on the understanding of the “New Way of Being a Communicating Church in Asia.”
Such a Church, according to Bishop-heads of FABC social communication commissions, is “a communion of communities, participatory, witnessing and dialogic, as well as prophetic” (FABC-OSC Bishops’ Meet 1997).
In their published document, the Bishops affirm the communicating Church’s “rootedness in the life of the Holy Trinity” as well as the “animation the gifts of the Holy Spirit breathe” into her ministry.
The phrase “A New Way of Being Church” was first coined at the Fifth Plenary Assembly of FABC Bishops in Bandung, Indonesia.
The same Bishops who gathered back in 1990 envisioned a Church that is concerned with the world. She “lives and dialogues,” said the Bishops, amid the “joys and hopes, fears as well as anxieties” of multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multi-cultural Asia.
By setting the goals and directions of FABC, the Plenary Assembly is known to be the Federation’s highest governing body.
Implementing the same goals and directions are the FABC central secretariat and nine “specialized offices,” including the FABC-Office of Social Communication or FABC-OSC.
ACC 1.0 hopes to revisit those visions and connect them with Pope Francis’ call for a synodal Church, whose members “journey together” or “encounter, listen, and discern” along a common path (2021).
Few of the invited speakers are Natasa Govekar of the Vatican Secretariat for Communications, Sr. Angela Ann Zukowski of the Institute of Pastoral Initiatives of University of Dayton in Ohio, Michael Unland of the Catholic Media Council or CAMECO in Germany, and Jessica Joy Candelario of Bukal ng Tipan Mission Spirituality Center in Taytay, Philippines.
The two-day event will be live streamed on Radio Veritas Asia’s YouTube channel (youtube.com/c/RadioVeritasAsia), Facebook page of Veritas Asia Institute of Social Communication (Facebook.com/VAISCOM), and the Facebook page of Mary the Queen Parish of Novaliches Diocese (Facebook.com/MTQPNovaliches).
Participation is free.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
