Archbishop Macwan: A mission of service to the poor

Voice of Asian Bishops with Archbishop Thomas Ignatius Macwan

In an exclusive interview with Radio Veritas Asia, Archbishop Thomas Ignatius Macwan of the Archdiocese of Gandhinagar in the western Indian state of Gujarat shared his insights on the Church’s mission to serve the poor and marginalized.

With a heart devoted to social justice, he emphasized that helping the less fortunate is central to the Church’s mission and a true reflection of Christ’s love.

Archbishop Macwan highlighted that reaching out to the poor is not just charity but a Gospel imperative.

“When we serve the poor, we serve Christ himself,” he said.

The archdiocese actively works to uplift the underprivileged through various initiatives, including education, healthcare, and financial assistance to those in need.

One of the key ways the Church helps the poor is by providing quality education to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“Education is the path to transformation,” the prelate noted.

The archdiocese runs schools and educational programs that offer hope and opportunity to children otherwise deprived of learning.

Access to healthcare remains a significant challenge for many in Gujarat’s rural areas.

Archbishop Macwan underscored the importance of medical aid, stating that the Archdiocese collaborates with hospitals and clinics to provide free or low-cost healthcare services.

“Good health is a fundamental human right, and we strive to ensure that no one is left behind,” he affirmed.

Beyond education and healthcare, the Archdiocese directly supports the destitute through food distribution programs and financial aid.

Many people, especially daily wage earners, struggle to make ends meet.

“Our mission is to be the hands and feet of Christ, ensuring that those in dire need are not forgotten,” the archbishop said.

Macwan also called upon the faithful to participate actively in these initiatives.

“The Church is not just an institution; it is a community of believers called to serve,” he urged.

He encouraged individuals and organizations to contribute their time, resources, and efforts to uplift the poor.

As the Archbishop of the Gandhinagar Archdiocese, he continues his mission with unwavering commitment to the poor.

Through education, healthcare, and direct aid, the Church is making a lasting impact on the lives of the underprivileged, embodying Christ’s love through service.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
