Archbishop Bernardito Auza

Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Bernardito Auza, a Filipino, as the Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union (EU).

As the pope’s representative to the EU, he will promote the Catholic Church’s programs based on its teachings and collaborate on matters related to social justice, migration, and the promotion of human dignity.

The archbishop has been serving as the nuncio to Spain and Andorra since October 2019.

Auza was born on June 10, 1959, in Talibon, Bohol, an island in the Visayan group in south-central Philippines, and he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Tagbilaran on June 29, 1985. He began his service in the diplomatic corps in 1990.

Auza first served in Madagascar from 1990 to 1993, later becoming part of the Holy See’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations before being appointed nuncio to Haiti in 2008.

He also served in Bulgaria and Albania before being appointed the Vatican’s representative to the United Nations in New York in 2014.

Auza is one of five Filipino apostolic nuncios, alongside Archbishop Osvaldo Padilla, Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus to South Korea; Archbishop Tito Yllana, the current nuncio to Israel and Palestine; Archbishop Francisco Padilla, nuncio to Guatemala; and Archbishop Arnaldo Catalan, nuncio to Rwanda.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
