Approach communication with a believer’s heart: Kolkata Archbishop

Archbishop Thomas Dsouza

Archbishop Thomas D'Souza of Kolkata said that approach to communication must be with the believer's heart in a Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences-Office of Social Communication (FABC-OSC)-sponsored webinar on June 17.

"We need to understand and utilize communication with the heart of a believer," the archbishop said.

The Archbishop of Kolkata, India, echoed Pope Benedict XVI’s 2011 World Communication Day message, which said that the "most profound convictions" held by believers and Christ’s truth would prevent "depersonalization, manipulation, and monopoly of opinion" from influencing human interactions.

D’Souza is a member of the Board of Bishops of the FABC-OSC.

In his talk, he said the faithful should "take active roles in communication activities" following the church’s leadership.

"We must make the communication of Jesus Christ relevant to our time through the available means of social communication," he concluded.

FABC-OSC and its training arm, Veritas Asia Institute of Social Communication (VAISCOM), organized the two-hour event with the theme "The Church's Call for Communication Formation."

VAISCOM offers an online course for priests, religious, and lay leaders entitled "Communication for Pastoral Leadership."

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
