Vatican, Chinese government continue dialogue on peace in Ukraine
The Holy See Press Office has confirmed that a phone call happened between Mr. Lu Hui, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Eurasian Affairs, and Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, who was entrusted by the pope with a mission of peace in Ukraine last year.
It was described as a “cordial conversation” between the two representatives, which took place on the morning of August 14.
“During the telephone conversation, great concern was expressed regarding the situation and the need to promote dialogue between the Parties, with adequate international guarantees for a just and lasting peace,” said the Vatican through a communique on August 15.
Last year, in September 2023, Cardinal Zuppi was in Beijing, China for three days, where personally met with Li and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China to discuss the war in Ukraine and the possibility of creating joint peace efforts.
Before that, the cardinal also visited Kiev and Moscow in Russia, and subsequently Washington in the United States, for further peace dialogues.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that in the phone call, Cardinal Zuppi expressed gratefulness on behalf of the Holy Father for the “unremitting efforts” of the Chinese government in promoting peace talks.
They also revealed that the two representatives exchanged views on the current situation of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
