Vatican Announces Start of Papal Conclave on May 7th

The conclave to elect the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church will commence on May 7th, 2025, following the Novemdiales Masses for the eternal repose of the late Pope Francis.
The decision to begin the conclave was made during the Fifth General Congregation held in the Vatican’s Synod Hall on Monday.
The election will take place in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, which will remain closed to the public during the conclave.
The process will begin with a solemn Eucharistic celebration and the Votive Mass Pro Eligendo Papa, attended by the Cardinal electors.
Following the Mass, the Cardinals will proceed in a solemn procession to the Sistine Chapel, where the election will begin.
The Cardinal electors will take an oath to fulfill their duties as Pastor of the Universal Church if elected, and to maintain secrecy regarding the election process.
The conclave will be conducted entirely within the Sistine Chapel, with no external communication allowed.
The Cardinal electors will vote in secret ballots, with a two-thirds majority required for the election of a new Pope. If voting fails to reach a consensus, a break for prayer and discussion is allowed.
Once a new Pope is elected, the Cardinal Deacons will ask for the elected candidate’s consent and the chosen papal name.
The new Pope will then address the faithful, and the Cardinal Proto-Deacon will announce the election with the iconic phrase, “Habemus Papam.”
The newly elected Pope will then give the Apostolic Blessing Urbi et Orbi from the Loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The conclave will conclude with the formal inauguration of the Papacy and the Pope’s possession of the Patriarchal Archbasilica of St. John Lateran.
