Talitha Kum leads global fight against human trafficking on International Day of Prayer
On February 8, 2025, the world marks the 11th International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking, shining a light on global efforts to end modern slavery.
Talitha Kum is at the forefront of this mission, a Catholic network of Catholic nuns dedicated to prevention, advocacy, and survivor support.
Sr. Abby Avelino, International Coordinator of Talitha Kum, leads the movement’s worldwide network of over 6,000 members, working tirelessly to combat human trafficking through awareness, rescue missions, and policy change.
This year’s theme, “Ambassadors of Hope, Together Against Human Trafficking,” aligns with the Jubilee Year’s call to be Pilgrims of Hope, emphasizing the collective responsibility to restore dignity to survivors.
Survivors play a crucial role in this fight. Pauline Akinyu Juma, founder of Rebirth of a Queen in Kenya, provides shelter and economic opportunities for survivors, despite limited resources and ongoing threats.
In Romania, legal activist Mario supports victims in navigating the justice system, advocating for more victim-centered policies.
Meanwhile, in Japan, youth ambassador Nana focuses on prevention through education, raising awareness among vulnerable communities, particularly migrants at risk of exploitation.
As the International Day of Prayer approaches, Talitha Kum urges individuals, institutions, and governments to move beyond awareness and take concrete action.
Sr. Abby’s message is clear: “No matter our faith or background, we are called to uphold human dignity and be ambassadors of hope.”
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
