Pope Leo names Cardinal Tagle as the new titular of Albano

On May 24, Pope Leo XIV appointed Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as the new titular of Albano, a suburbicarian diocese the pontiff himself held before his papal election, according to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) News.
“The Holy Father has assigned the title of the Suburbicarian Church of Albano to Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization in the Section for First Evangelization and the new particular churches,” the appointment read.
Leo — formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost —has been the pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization since February 2025. He also served as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, which was under Pope Francis.
The Diocese of Albano, situated just outside Rome, is one of seven suburbicarian sees traditionally associated with cardinal bishops, the highest-ranking order within the College of Cardinals.
Tagle had served as cardinal priest of the Church of San Felice da Cantalice in Centocelle since 2012 before receiving the title of the Suburbicarian Church of Albano.
In 2022, Francis elevated Tagle to the order of cardinal bishops, assigning him to the same titular church.
