Pope Francis unveils 21 new Cardinals in upcoming December Consistory

Pope and New Cardinals

Pope Francis has announced a Consistory for the creation of 21 new Cardinals from around the globe, scheduled to take place on December 8, 2024, at the Vatican, coinciding with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

The announcement came during the Holy Father's Sunday Angelus, where he revealed that the Consistory will occur just before the opening of the 2025 Jubilee of Hope and following the conclusion of the Second Session of the Synod on Synodality.

The most recent consistory, where new Cardinals were created, took place on September 30, 2023, ahead of the First Session of the Synod on Synodality.

Pope Francis emphasized the global representation among the Cardinal-elects, highlighting how their diverse origins reflect the universality of the Church.

"Their origins express the universality of the Church, which continues to proclaim God's merciful love to all people on earth. Their inclusion in the Diocese of Rome also manifests the inseparable bond between the See of Peter and the particular Churches spread throughout the world," the Pope said as cited in the Vatican News.

He further invited the faithful to pray for the new Cardinals, asking that they may strengthen their commitment to Christ and assist him in his ministry as the Bishop of Rome for the benefit of all God's people.

The College of Cardinals will grow to 256 members following this Consistory, with 141 of them eligible to vote in a papal conclave.
